Australia’s New Skills in Demand Visa: Replacing the TSS 482
Australia is set to introduce a new Skills in Demand visa system in late 2024, replacing the current Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482 visa. This overhaul aims to better align immigration with Australia’s labour market needs.
The new system will feature three visa pathways:
- Specialist Skills Pathway
- Targets high-skilled workers earning over $135,000 per year.
- Removes the occupation list, allowing for greater flexibility.
- Offers expedited processing times of around 7 days.
- Core Skills Pathway
- Focuses on skilled workers earning between $70,000 and $135,000 per year.
- Requires occupations to be listed on a revised Skills in Demand List.
- The minimum salary threshold will be indexed annually.
- Essential Skills Pathway
- Targets lower-skilled workers earning under $70,000 per year.
- Details of this pathway are still being finalised, but it’s expected to involve union oversight and be capped in numbers.
- Likely to focus on sectors like aged care and disability.
Key features of the new visa system include:
- Visa Duration: Up to 4 years.
- Employer Flexibility: Easier for visa holders to change employers.
- Pathways to Permanent Residency: Clearer options for transitioning to permanent residency.
