Short-Term Stream (2-4 years)
Designed to fill urgent skill shortages in specialised fields, the Short-Term Stream allows Australian businesses to sponsor overseas workers for up to 2 years, extendable to 4 years in specific cases. Holders of this visa must work exclusively for the sponsoring employer.
Medium-Term Stream (Up to 4 years)
For businesses requiring skilled workers for a longer period, the Medium-Term Stream allows visa holders to work for up to 4 years. This stream offers a potential pathway to permanent residency.
Labour Agreement Stream
This stream is available to employers who have entered into a Labour Agreement with the Australian government, allowing them to sponsor overseas workers for positions not listed on standard occupation lists.
Subsequent Entrant
This stream allows family members of 482 visa holders to join them in Australia, with options for work rights depending on individual circumstances.
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa Subclass 482 Application Process

Once sponsorship is approved, the employer must submit a nomination application. This step involves detailing the job position, the salary, and proving efforts to recruit locally.
3. Visa Application
The nominated employee must submit the visa application, providing proof of skills and qualifications required for the role. The applicant must meet health and character requirements to qualify.

Employee Requirements for the 482 Visa
To be eligible for sponsorship under the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482 Visa, employees must meet the following requirements:
1. Skills and Qualifications
- Relevant Skills: Employees must have the required skills and qualifications for the nominated occupation as outlined in the ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) code.
- Mandatory Licensing or Registration: Some occupations may require employees to hold specific Australian licenses or registrations (e.g., medical professionals, electricians).
- Skills Assessment: For certain occupations, employees may need a positive skills assessment from a relevant assessing authority. The assessment must be completed or in progress at the time of the visa application.
2. Work Experience
- Minimum Work Experience: Employees must have a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a closely related field.
- Recent Graduates: If an employee has recently graduated in Australia, they may not meet the work experience requirements unless they have prior overseas experience.
3. English Language Proficiency
Employees must demonstrate their proficiency in English unless exempt. The acceptable English language tests include:
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System): A minimum overall score of 5, with no individual score below 5 for the Medium-Term stream, or 4.5 for the Short-Term stream.
- Alternative Tests: Equivalent scores in TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Cambridge English (CAE).
- Exemptions: Applicants may be exempt if they hold a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, or Ireland, or if they have completed at least 5 years of full-time study in English.
4. Health and Character Requirements
- Health Examination: Employees must undergo a health examination and meet the health standards set by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
- Character Assessment: Police clearance certificates from every country where the employee has lived for 12 months or more in the past 10 years must be provided.
- Character Test: Employees must pass a character test, ensuring they have no criminal background that could pose a threat to Australia.
5. Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement
- Intent to Stay Temporarily: Employees must demonstrate that they are genuine temporary entrants, intending to stay in Australia only for the purposes of their employment under the TSS 482 Visa.
- Immigration History: The Australian Department of Home Affairs will assess the employee’s previous visa history, especially if they have held multiple Short-Term 482 Visas in the past.
6. Other Key Requirements
- No Outstanding Debts: Employees must not have any unpaid debts to the Australian government.
- Condition 8607: Employees are restricted to working in the occupation and for the employer specified in the visa application. To change jobs or occupations, a new nomination and visa application must be submitted.
Important Notes
These requirements can vary slightly depending on the occupation, visa stream (short-term, medium-term, or labour agreement), and individual circumstances.
Consult a Registered Migration Agent: It’s highly recommended to consult with a registered migration agent to ensure all criteria are met and to navigate any complexities specific to the applicant’s case.
