Booming economy
Our economy has been ranked amongst one of the best in the western world; having successfully avoided recession since 1991. That’s 27 years of continuous economic growth.
This growth can be primarily attributed to increased household spending which in turn results from more people being in the workforce. Statistics like these are strong indicators of an abundance of job opportunities available to citizens and international workers alike
Job opportunities
Australia isn’t named the land of opportunity for nothing. The rate of unemployment is low across the country. Many professions are still experiencing a shortage (such as accountants, agriculture, childcare, construction, engineering trades, and food trades to name a few) making the need for skilled international workers all the more critical.
Additionally, our booming economic growth (see point one) means that many businesses are able to develop faster; opening up more job opportunities for both local and international skilled workers.
Decent wages
The average salary for a full-time employee in Australia is approximately $82,436. The average salary varies within each state: employees in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) have the highest national average at $94,224 while workers in Tasmania earn $71,718 on average.
Full-time employees in the Accommodation, Café and Restaurants industry earn an average of $59,4115 while workers in the mining industry were reported to have the highest earnings, averaging at $137,660 a year.
Additionally, Australia has the highest minimum wage in the world at $15.96 (approximately $9.54USD) an hour after tax.
Education
Australia’s offerings for further education are not limited to tertiary education. They also extend to non-award courses, vocational courses and postgraduate study. Students are spoilt for choice, and Australia provides various pathways for obtaining the qualifications needed for chosen industries.
International students choose Australia as their place for further education, as having an Australian education can give them a competitive advantage in the global job market once they have graduated.
Primary and secondary schooling is compulsory in Australia. Public schools are free for children to attend as they are financed by the Government. There are options available for private schooling too, with tuition fees varying between schools; some are more affordable than others. Either way, there are many opportunities to obtain a high-quality education in Australia.
Government + Politics
Whilst this might seem like an odd topic to list as a plus considering our prime minister has changed almost every year, Australia’s voting system is compulsory for all eligible citizens, and is preferential based; therefore, everyone must vote and be informed since we have to rank each candidate rather than just selecting one favourite politician. This preferential voting system “exerts a moderating influence” as noted in a recent article from The Economist.
Australia’s political landscape is preferred over other countries as candidates do not need to “pander to the prejudices” of voters.
Healthcare
Australia’s healthcare system, Medicare, is known as one the best in the world. Medicare covers most basic hospital and medical fees; making healthcare affordable for most Australians.
In the scenarios where Medicare is not able to cover, private healthcare is available and is often quite affordable.
A true melting pot
Over 40% of the Australian population is either an immigrant or the child of an immigrant; making our country the home of an incredibly diverse, multicultural society.
